Notes

Note 1

William Gentry enlisted in the Confederate Army on 14 October 1861 and was discharged on 18 June 1865 (see Military Record appended). He married Susan the following December. William and Susan set up housekeeping on their farm and shortly before they were ready to harvest their first crops, "Bill" caught a thief stealing their corn, and shot the man. Stealing a man's livestock or crops was a most serious crime during those days and even though "Bill" may have been justified in shooting the man, he became frightened of what the consequences might be, for he thought that he had either killed the man or had wounded him so badly that he could not possibly live. So "Bill" and Susan packed up their household goods and fled to the safety of Missouri. It is believed that they went to Carter County near the town of Ellsnore and lived there for some time. Later word came to them that the man had not only lived but had fully recovered from the gunshot wound. During their stay in Missouri their son, William Harmon, was born. When they learned that it was safe, they loaded their wagons and returned toTexas. William Gentry and his family left Fannin County, and moved to Jones County, in the early 1890's and it wasn't long until William's brother, Samuel Cain Gentry and his family followed them there.
